Typography has long been a powerful force in the fight for freedom. From Martin Luther King Jr. to Eva Perón, Stacey Abrams to Harriet Tubman, CHARACTERS: Type in Action delves into the impact of typography on social justice, examining its history and its role in today’s movements.
Throughout history, brave acts of protest and advocacy have sent undeniable reverberations within social justice movements. Typography has existed alongside the pursuit of freedoms— sometimes in the forefront as protest signs or in the background, as building signage or on the jersey of a protester. In all of these cases, typography has created visual texture to the movements. The purpose of this exhibition is two-fold: 1) It celebrates historical icons whose lives and work advanced social justice issues, and 2) It demonstrates the power of typography as a tool for discourse in the pursuit of liberation.
VOCAL Type and Civilization reached out to me to transform the entire CHARACTERS: Type In Action exhibition at the Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) into a newspaper magazine. This way, any institution, regardless of budget and location, can display a mini version of the exhibition using copies of the newspaper.
Some of the layouts and design language from the newspaper became integral parts of the overall experiential design for the exhibition itself. I had the honor of assisting with the experiential design of the show as well as the design of the newspaper.
