Joie de Vivre is a book chronicling Kayla Griffith's journey to France, where she ends up falling in love with life. Joie de Vivre literally translates to “joy of living,” but it’s deeper than that. A better translation might be “the joy of being alive,” embracing life to the fullest.
“As a traveler in a foreign land, I found a sense of freedom —an escape from the expectations of daily life—to simply observe. This book captures some of those observations. As you read through my musings, you’ll see my journey of discovering myself by being lost to the world.”
This book is a collection of photographs taken on 35mm film during Kayla's eight-week trip to France. Film has a rawness and depth that’s difficult to replicate in digital photography, but it also comes with challenges. To keep track of her process, Kayla created a “film plan” in her notebook. This helped her organize which film stocks she used, which rolls were shot in specific locations, and, in one case, note that a roll needed to be pushed during development. A key was developed throughout the book in each location specifically mentioning what kind of film Kayla used.
